The Infrastructure Forum was delighted to be joined for a dinner discussion following the Advisory Council meeting by Sir Amyas Morse KCB, the Comptroller and Auditor General of the National Audit Office.
With its important role in helping to secure value for money from public spending, its audits of particular activities and its thematic studies advising government and parliament on the best use of national resources the NAO is a key interlocutor for The Infrastructure Forum.
Special Roundtable with Liz Peace CBE

Many in The Infrastructure Forum’s network have been closely engaged in the debate on planning reform with particular regard to incentives to encourage development including the operation of Section 106 scheme and the Community Infrastructure Levy.
TIF was delighted to welcome Liz Peace, who was undertaking the Review on CIL. She presented her findings to our network shortly before her report was published.

The Infrastructure Forum’s annual Hartwell House was held on Thursday 7 to Friday 8 July 2016. The gathering featured a sessions on skills for infrastructure delivery; assessed road and rail; water competition as well as resilience of our national infrastructure. Speakers included:

Special Roundtable with Nick Boles MP

Nick Boles MP, Minister of State at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills joined a roundtable of The Infrastructure Forum to explore topical issues with our network. At BIS Nick is responsible for the construction and rail business sectors, trade union and employment law and consumer and competition policy. Construction, apprenticeships and the importance of skills were all discussed by Nick.

The Infrastructure Forum’s Advisory Council was kindly being hosted by BLP on Wednesday 10 February 2016.
We were joined for a dinner discussion by Rt Hon Lord Adonis, Chair of the National Infrastructure Commission. The Commission has an especially significant agenda in the transport and energy areas but also in drawing up a National Infrastructure Assessment and many of our members were keen to hear about these areas.
Special roundtable with Sir Peter Hendy, Chairman of Network Rail

The Infrastructure Forum was pleased to welcome the new Chairman of Network Rail, Sir Peter Hendy, who joined us for a roundtable on Monday 18 January 2016.
Sir Peter was appointed after leading a highly successful career at Transport for London, and was tasked by the Secretary of State with leading a wide ranging review of Network Rail’s ability to deliver on its £38.5 billion programme for the entire control period. Members were particular keen to hear about the progress of this Review, as well as Network Rail’s future plans as the sector continues to evolve.
The Lessons of Thames Tideway Financing

The successful and innovative financing model for Thames Tideway is full of interest as Britain considers new ideas for the funding and financing of other major infrastructure projects. We were delighted, therefore, when Andy Mitchell CBE, the Chief Executive of Thames Tideway, led a special roundtable to examine the financing of the Thames Tideway “super sewer” and its lessons for other initiatives.
Major Roads for the Future

Many in The Infrastructure Forum’s network are concerned with planning for, construction, financing of and policy towards Britain’s strategic road network.Therefore, the Forum had much pleasure in welcoming a presentation on an important two-year study on Major Roads for the Future, which was being carried out by the transport experts Dr David Quarmby and Phil Carey.
We are delighted that David Quarmby and Phil Carey joined us to set out key aspects of their forthcoming report and gain feedback from The Infrastructure Forum’s network, together with Graham Pendlebury, Director of Local Transport at the Department for Transport. The discussion featured representatives from Highways England, Local Enterprise Partnerships, local authorities, investors, constructors and advisers in the sector.

Energy policy issues are at the top of The Infrastructure Forum’s agenda this year and we were delighted to say that we had the opportunity to discuss government energy policy with the Minister of State at the Department of Energy and Climate Change, Andrea Leadsom MP.
Andrea Leadsom is highly regarded for her analytical and policy skills and has been a welcomed visitor to the European Policy Forum. The group discussed the need for new energy infrastructure investment, storage and renewables in a timely meeting about the UK's energy security.
Special Roundtable with Nicola Shaw, Chief Executive of HS1
Thursday 11 February
Nicola Shaw has been asked by government to report on how it should approach the longer term future shape and financing of Network Rail, and led a special Forum roundtable on this subject. Nicola’s review is designed to examine the whole structure of the rail industry with an open brief. The final report to the Secretary of State for Transport and the Chancellor of the Exchequer is due in early 2016.It was therefore a particularly opportune moment for our network to exchange perspectives and ideas with her.
