Hynet Future Phases
The HyNet North West Hydrogen Pipeline is essential to unlocking the benefits and ambitions of HyNet North West. Our project will put in place the infrastructure to deliver clean hydrogen power to industry, and blended hydrogen power to homes across the region.
Development of125 kilometres (around 77 miles) of new pipeline that will safely transport low carbon hydrogen produced by Vertex Hydrogen at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex, or the Inovyn storage site, to various industrial customers.
It will also provide the opportunity to blend hydrogen into the existing gas network at Partington and Warburton (near Manchester). It will also link to underground hydrogen storage facilities that will be used to balance supply and demand.
The pipeline will support the UK’s drive towards a net zero future and will unlock permanent jobs in the region.
The pipeline will be underground, although we will need ten Hydrogen Above Ground Installations (HAGIs) at various locations along the route.
Location
The HyNet North West cluster is located in northwest England and north Wales, spanning from Flintshire and Wrexham through Cheshire, Liverpool, and Greater Manchester into Lancashire
Investment Type
: The UK Government's Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP) funds the HyNet Industrial Fuel Switching: 2 program. The UK government also approves funding for the HyNet North West project. The RAB model is used to fund hydrogen and CO2 pipelines and hydrogen storage.
Planning Status
The HyNet Carbon Dioxide Pipeline was granted a Development Consent Order by the Secretary of State for the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero on March 20, 2024.
Funding
The estimated required infrastructure investment for the full HyNet project is around £0.9 Billion. This includes hydrogen production, pipelines and full CCUS chain.
